On 21st February 2024, our GCSE students were transported to an enchanted Athenian forest to enjoy the entanglements of four lovers, observe a weaver transform into a donkey and witness the consequences of the schism between the King and Queen of the fairies.

The 1999 film production is one of the most colourful; capturing the humour, jouissance and revelry of Shakespeare鈥檚 comic play. Often, I can be a little sceptical of modern productions (this is meant to be set in 12th century BC) though the addition of bicycles to transport the lovers throughout the forest was not only a source of mirth for our students but enabled the Athenians multiples escapes to happen swiftly!聽 Many were amused by the conflict between Helena and Hermia which erupted in a mud bath rendering them completely camouflaged by the end! Stanley Tucci deserves as special mention as the mischievous Puck for his agility and wry expressions.

In keeping with the magical spirit of the play, Richard Martin (Head of English) had arranged for a tray of pink fairy cakes and pots of berries to be transported to 90 library to be washed down with elderflower cordial. A successful screening leading to many fruitful discussions!
